Unshaved

At first there was a shadow
just a hint I'd stayed out late
or maybe I was lazy, thinking
no - that shave can wait

It wasn't really planned as such
it sort of just appeared
for no good reason I can think of
- I grew a beard!

A week went by and someone said
"Looks dangerous!" (it's true)
I took this as a compliment
(was someone that I knew)

I waited then another week
a neighbour here, he sneered
He thought it unforgivable
that I had grown a beard

I did this on my holiday
was interesting to see
what I would look like and how many
bristles - white! - would be

But then the day, it came around
- and both my children cheered -
I went into the bathroom and...
... I shaved off my beard!
