STAN IN THE GARDEN
Stan is digging in the garden
Planting the spring bulbs
And the wallflowers,
The air is chilly
The cold nipped at his fingers.
The ground is rock hard
We had to soften it with hot water
There is frost bite on the plant leaves
Jack Frost has been up to his pranks again.
Stan thought to himself
Where is Jack Frost hiding?
Will I meet him in the local?
Is he smirking on the other side of the wall?
Brother Ted has called round for a chat
And to give Stan a hand in the garden,
Brother Ted smokes Piccadilly
Stan smokes Senior Service
They both cough a bit,
Us ladies are smoking Mayfair.
I’m in the kitchen with cousin Molly
She is helping me with the washing
And we are having a chat
We are proud of our new washing machine.
The men are stopping for a cigarette break
Sometimes they exchange cigarettes
Molly and I take them out some tea and biscuits.
Stan and Ted are used to heavy manual work
Gardening is how they unwind.
The factory they work in is dark and dirty
And it’s smells hang over our garden
As do the smells of neighbouring factories,
But the flower scents
Help to keep the factory smells at bay.
And if we plant the bulbs early enough
The Hyacinths come up in January
This back garden is Stan’s haven
Brother Ted’s back garden is his haven too.
One day we will catch that rascal Jack Frost
Then there will be what for
We will give him a piece of our minds.
God Bless our proud little garden
With the Pelargonium.
The Fucia Bush,
The Campanulas, the Asters,
And in the summer
Some Love In A Mist.
